We have seen many imaginary movies as well as games. People get the idea that this can only happen in movies and games. But, when Microsoft will launch the tremendous revolutionary device HOLOLENS, then all those imagination becomes true. Let me explain to you in very simple manner, what is Hololens, What exactly it does, and How?
What is Hololens?
Microsoft Hololens is a pair of smart glasses which runs on Windows 10 operating system and has the ability to perform holographic computation. In order to fully appreciate their functionality, it will be wise to first define what a Hologram is. A Hologram is an object, just like any other object in the real world with only one difference, they are not made up of physical matter but are made entirely of light. These objects can be viewed from different angles, directions and distances just like any other real world object, but they are mass-less entities and don’t offer any resistance to touch or push. Hololens are primarily a device that projects Holograms into real space. They are designed to incorporate virtual objects (Holograms) into the physical real world so as to give a perspective of shared reality.
The device is battery powered and doesn’t require any external connectivity with phones or PC for its working. It is expected to release shortly after the release of the much awaited Windows 10 in summer 2015.
How it works?
Hololens generates multi-dimensional images that are perceived by users as holographic objects in the real world. The users can pin the objects at a physical locations or can allow them to move along with their field of view maintaining a fixed position with respect to them. The holograms appear life-like, they can be moved, reshaped and interacted with. We can interact with them in the most natural ways like gestures, gaze and voice. Gestures can help in creating and manipulating shape and size of holograms. Gaze is useful for navigation and exploration while voice is an important medium to communicate with the apps.
Hololens is embedded with some very advanced sensors like an energy-efficient camera for gesture recognition, a microphone array for speech recognition and an inertial measurement unit which includes a gyroscope, a magnetometer and an accelerometer for spatial mapping. The inputs of all these sophisticated sensors is fed to holographic processing unit(HPU), which is a custom co-processor by Microsoft to integrate and process data from sensors in an efficient manner.
Why we need it?
We have made tremendous advancement on how much sophistication can be handled by computers, but the ways to send commands to computers are still constrained to screen touch or mouse click. Using Holograms we can pin apps, digital contents and information in our real worlds and can interact with them like any physical objects.
We can think of a large number of possible applications for Hololens, especially for developers, creators, designers, commercial organizations and computer gamers. Hololens and Windows 10 will equip them with the power of holographic computing that will bring their data and information to life and enhance understating, modification and creativity.
Hololens targets to nurture a new class of creators who can dream 3D objects with little to no prior training in AutoCAD, as understanding objects in real life is much easier than on a computer screen. The device can be a big plus for teams that communicate complex sets of data and collaborate across varying time zones of the world. Just imagine that you are sitting in an empty conference room with Hololens glasses on and the room getting filled with your colleagues from all across the world.  
Yes, people have talked about virtual conferences, but what is more promising about Hololens is that it engages the virtual objects with the real surroundings. How is it different from others?
The next question is that how Hololens is different from any other virtual reality headset present in the market?  The fundamental difference is that virtual reality completely immerses you in a computer-generated world or virtual world, the person is completely blind to whatever is happening in the real world. But Hololens aims to deliver mixed reality where a person can enjoy digital life along with staying connected with the surroundings around him. Its display is completely transparent and computer generated objects appear only at the center of the vision and the rest of the vision is still filled with the real world around you.
One incredible feature about Hololens is their speakers, that give a spatial sound experience. They are situated near the user’s ear, but unlike headphones they do not hinder external sound, thus allowing the user to hear both virtual and real world sounds. Spatial sound effect means that the user can perceive that a sound is coming from a specified location. You can hear where some holographic object has fallen. If you turn away from the object and try to walk, the sound audibility will adjust itself to give a perception that it is coming from behind and gradually getting weaker and weaker as you continue walking.
One issue that has been repeatedly reported with the current hardware is the limited field of view of the device. Holograms only appear in the center of the vision, if you turn your head a little bit then they disappear from your view. Also, if the hologram is large enough then you will be able to appreciate only a little piece of it at a time.
